from a Confederate artillery position at Fort Donelson
During February 1862, Union troops under Brig. General Ulysses S. Grant - including four ironclad gunboats from U.S. Navy Flag Officer Andrew H. Foote's Western Flotilla - wrested control of Fort Henry on the Tennessee River and Fort Donelson on the Cumberland River, closing down vital shipping routes in the western part of the Confederacy.
